Teacup Kittens

Posted in Cats

teacup kittenTeacup kittens are highly desired because they are cute and continue to look like kittens even when they mature. They are easy to hold and most are lap cats. Like all grown cats miniature cats lose their kitten-like behaviour as they age.

Cats advertised as tea cup kittens are not always genuine miniture cats. A teacup size female cat can weigh anywhere between 3 to 6.5 pounds and a teacup size male cat can weigh from 3 to 7.5 pounds. A breeder can try to advertise a cat under ten pounds as a teacup kitten when its weight actually falls within the normal range for a standard size cat. Therefore beware of anyone trying to sell you a runt or telling you that any cat less than ten pounds is a miniature.

Small cats are produced by a process of inbreeding. The smallest cat of a particular breed is mated with the smallest cat of another breed. This is repeated progressively so that in each generation a miniature or teacup cat is produced. The end result of this bredding process is a type of dwarfism. There are a variety of breeds that are classed as teacup kittens.

Napoleon
Results from the mating of a Munchkin with a Persian. They are one of the newer teacup cat breeds and have the long coat and big eyes characteristic of the Persian.

Lambkin
Has been developed by crossing a Munchkin with a Selkirk Rex. The name derives from their soft curly coats which are similar to that of a lamb.

MiniPer
This is  a combination of Persian and Exotic breeds. They are natural dwarves and have proportionate bodies only they are smaller than the standard Persian and Exotic cats.  The majority of miniature or teacup kittens are cross breeds of Persians and Exotics, and these are the most popular of the miniature cat breeds.
