YOUR PERFECT PUPPY

That gorgeous ball of fluff will soon grow into a full blown bounding beast on four furry paws, so making the right decision now will make a world of difference in the next few years.

Before buying a new puppy, consider the following:

* Lap dog or jogging partner
* Small or large
* Male or female
* Long or short hair
* Grooming needs
* Exercise needs
* Purebred or mixed breed

Adorable ‘mongrels’ are loved by many Aussies – and for a good reason too. The only down side to a mixed breed dog, is not knowing its breed history. Often understanding the breed history will provide insight into an animal’s behaviour. On the plus side, owning a mixed breed means you get to enjoy the various aspects of each breed type.

If you want a mixed breed dog, take the time to visit your local dog shelters and the RSPCA. Many a best friend is found in these places.

Fancy a prancing poodle or adorable dalmation? For those wanting a purebred dog, start by researching each breed to get a better understanding of their own unique set of characteristics. Visit the local dog park and chat to dog owners about their breed of choice. Of course, they will all admit their breed is the best.

With the dreaming part complete, the next step is to fully comprehend the costs involved in owning a dog and committing long term to its health and happiness. Costs will include the purchase price, initial veterinary check-ups and vaccinations, ongoing food and treats, flea and worm treatments, annual check-ups and vaccinations, pet insurance, winter wardrobe, bedding, grooming, dental, annual kennel costs if you vacation away from home, plus additional costs for those unexpected surprises.

The next step is to find the right breeder. Always ask to view the puppy’s parents so you can see what the animal will look like when it matures. Watch the parents’ disposition and ask the breeder any questions you have. Once you buy the puppy, take it to your veterinarian for a check-up right away to make sure the puppy is healthy and physically sound. At this time, you can also make appointments for vaccinations.

And now the fun begins! It’s time for puppy preschool. Unfortunately, many pet owners find this first step annoying. However, it’s important to understand that just attending a group class is providing much needed early socialisation for your animal – and anything else should be considered a bonus. Many vet clinics run puppy preschools. This is a great way to have all your questions answered and learn the basics of dog obedience.

Once pooch is old enough, you’ll be joining the ranks of the adolescent pups to learn obedience training. This is a great social adventure and will develop the relationship between you and your new best friend.
