ONE CAT OR TWO?

Cats are great company, affectionate and good listeners, and are the difference between a warm home and loneliness for many people. They love to play, are clean and quiet and do not need long walks. They live quite happily within the confines of the household, but cats are social creatures and if you have two cats instead of one, they will never be lonely.

The best option is to simply buy two kittens, so long as you can afford this option. Young kittens are like young children so they will need lots of attention to grow up happy and well socialised. They will also have an abundance of energy and two cats together will provide your household members with a 24-hour floorshow!

Cat families usually play better in even numbers, so to create a balance of purrfect harmony in your home, think in pairs!

Before you take home those irresistible kittens, here are a few easy steps to get yourself cat-ready:

Kitten-proofing the garden
Ensure the garden is safe with no traps or problem spots for curious kittens. This may include removing dangerous objects in the garden such as wire or old timber planks with nails; mending holes in fences or gates to keep larger animals out; ensuring poisons such as rat or mouse bait are not accessible.

Room indoors
Set aside a room or area in the house where the kittens can play. It's a good idea to clear a shelf in a bookcase or windowsill, as cats like to climb.

Area to dine
Set aside an eating area where the kittens will be protected from other animals and bad weather. Ensure kittens have access to clean fresh water at all times.

Kitten's 'bedroom'
Decide where your kittens will sleep and prepare the area with blankets, one litter tray for each cat, newspaper, a box, etc for warmth and comfort.

Toys
Make a few toys such as a 'bungy mouse' that hangs on an elasticised string, a woollen pom-pom or a house from a cardboard box to help entertain and stimulate the kittens.

Shopping list
Prepare a shopping list of all requirements such as kitten food, food and water bowls, kitty litter, sleeping basket, scratching post, etc.
