DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING IN ONE EVENING?

This was the headline of a press release that we received recently. The press release related the story of Don, a retired plumber who was about to give away his dog Misty due to its bad behaviour. However his local vet recommended a particular book on dog behaviour that Don used to address Misty's problems and turn her into a "new dog" in next to no time. We thought this was worth some investigation.....

We ended up going to the website mentioned in the press release and buying a copy of "How To Train Your Dog In One Evening". The book is distributed by a specialty book publisher, and the first thing to note is that it is delivered as a downloadable PDF file. That means you can download it right off the internet and have it in a couple minutes, rather than have to wait for it to be posted. We found the credit card order process, via a secure site, was smooth and simple. You can view the downloaded file on your computer or print it out, which is what we did.

The table of contents is as follows:

1. Problems with housebreaking
2. Not Coming When Called
3. Running Away When Let Loose
4. Excessive Barking
5. Problems With Digging
6. Jumping On People

Bonus Section

The book addresses each of the ten dog behaviour problems listed in the table of contents, and is loaded with tips from the contributing panel of dog experts including obedience trainers, show dog trainers, breeders, veterinary technicians and police dog handlers.

Barking, biting, chewing, running away, pulling on leashes, house training - you name it and it’s in this book. Each behavioural problem is introduced using the real life story of a particular dog. For example, some of the dogs you will meet are Nugget the adult Shih Tzu with house training problems, Snoopy the Schnauzer who barks too much and Tipper the Beagle who has an itch to run.

One of the best features of the book is that many different tips and techniques are described for each specific problem. Therefore you’re not stuck with an all-or-nothing solution - you have more than one to choose from. For example, in the chapter about how to stop your dog from jumping all over people there are 10 techniques described, and there are 14 training tips in the chapter dealing with excessive barkers.

Contrary to the book's title, most of these tips and strategies won't work overnight, as successful dog training requires some patience and perseverance. However, armed with the knowledge and strategies described in the book any of your dog's frustrating behavioural problems can be corrected.

There are some USA specific references in the 4 page bonus section at the back of the book, where a number of products are listed with American prices and suppliers, however it wouldn't be too hard to track down similar items from local stores.

Overall we found the content of the book to be comprehensive and first rate, with valuable information for anyone who wants to have a better behaved dog.

The normal cost for the book in Australia is $39, however we have been able to arrange a special Xmas price for Pet News readers of only $20. We can't guarantee that this price will be available after Xmas, so if you are interested you would be advised to buy now to get the special pricing.
